Helping someone learn to help themselves is an incredibly satisfying experience. And it is often part of a web designer’s job description. We build something for our clients and then teach them to how to use it.
A platform such as WordPress makes this possible. However, it’s not always easy. Clients can run the gamut in terms of technical knowledge. Therefore, we must be able to effectively communicate with people of all skill levels.
Plus, there really isn’t such a thing as a “standard” WordPress website. There are plenty of shared traits. But the endless combinations of themes, plugins and customization make every site unique.
How, then, do we go about training our clients to use WordPress? Let’s explore some best practices for passing on our knowledge. Read More
One of the biggest and greatest things that has happened to WordPress is the addition of Custom Post Types (CPTs) way back in WordPress 3.0. CPTs really helped WordPress mature into a Content Management System and are absolutely necessary in every site I build and the majority of plugins that I use.
CPTs can be defined in code with various arguments and parameters, but the more you want to customize the post type, the more code you need. However, not everyone wants to get to grips with adding and editing code for their site and would prefer to do this kind of registration in the admin dashboard. Have you heard of Easy Content Types? It does just that. Originally a plugin from renowned WordPress plugin developer Pippin Williamson, it was recently acquired by the guys over at ThemeIsle.
The great thing about Easy Content Types is that it doesn’t just work for CPTs, you can also define custom taxonomies and meta boxes! Their site lists the full features of the plugin and has a good deal of screenshots of the plugin which I recommend you checking out.
Building WordPress sites quickly and easily with content builders is a recent trend in WordPress at the moment. Have you heard of the MotoPress Content Editor plugin? It extends the WordPress editor to give you a feature rich visual builder to create and edit your pages, posts, and custom post types by dragging and dropping only.
Be sure to have a watch of the feature video and try out the demo.
